Warm Welsh Welcome at Norden Farm

2/10/2016

There was a warm welsh welcome in the hills around Norden Farm in Maidenhead last Saturday (24 September 2016) when the audience were treated to a concert provided by the Caerphilly Male Voice Choir. Singing to an almost full auditorium they performed traditional welsh songs including Myfanwy and Men of Harlech. These invoked a strong sense of ‘hiraeth’ in those of us with welsh roots.
Unusually for a male voice choir there was a female vocalist, Cheryl Roberts, who is classically trained and included in her repertoire songs from shows such as Chess and Sweet Charity. This combination of music was certainly uplifting. The closing song of the concert, Calon Lan, was dedicated to a recently deceased member of Windsor St George, Emrys Richards.
The concert was organized by the Rotary Club of Windsor St George in conjunction with Norden Farm. Profits from the concert will go to Rotary Foundation charities such as Shelterbox and the Walk Centre in Kenya which the club supports. A raffle raised money for the Rotary ‘End Polio Now’ campaign which has almost succeeded in eradicating polio from the world. Windsor St George at the Windsor Summer Fayre

On Saturday 28th a few members of Windsor St George manned a double stand, with options for eveyone in the family. Half the stand was dedicated to fun family games, such as "toss the teddy bear" and American Corn Hole. The other half was a bric-a-brac sale, with plenty of interesting things to buy for just a few pounds.

Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate with us this year, but in spite of the heavy showers, members of the public supported the event and we raised some funds for our activities.

See you next summer!

12 teams joined us for a night full of interesting trivia and thanks to their generosity we raised funds to support a very worthy cause.

Congratulations to the winning team, "Old Dogs" and to those who went home with nice prizes from our special raffle.

We look forward to seeing you all next year for our quiz, but don't forget to check this website and our social media accounts for more fun events organised by the club.

Merry Christmas !!!

Choir singing
What an amazing lift of Christmas spirit ! Our 25th Festival of Christmas Music and Readings last night has certainly got us in the festive mood. Wonderful performances by the Royal Free Singers set the joyful tone while the new local chamber voice choir Voci warmed our hearts further. The Windsor Boys School band arrangement was something special and clearly appreciated by the enthusiastic audience. Of course, what makes this really special to us is that we were raising funds in aid of Sebastian's Action Trust and other Rotary charities.
Earlier in the evening Voci delighted a crowd outside the Parish Church with a delightful 15 minute Christmas Carol performance. Even Santa made a special guest appearance which surprised and wowed the young children gathered. This was part of the Windsor & Eton Living Advent Calendar which has been bringing the community out since 1 December.

2013 Christmas Street collection

7/12/2013

Our Christmas collection this year was in aid of Railway Children, a UK based international children's charity that fights for vulnerable children who live alone at risk on the streets, where they suffer abuse and exploitation. Railway Children race to reach children as soon as they arrive on the streets and intervene before an abuser can.

Members of Windsor St George raised awareness of the charity as well
as over £ 400 through a bucket collection in Windsor’s King Edward’s Court and Windsor Royal Station shopping centres.

Thank you to all who donated money, time and effort to make this event possible!

When there's a "wheel" [power], there's a way... or 80 of them!

Members of Windsor St George attended the closing ceremony for the Round the Thames Valley in 80 Ways event in aid of Wheel Power at the Wycombe Wanderers football ground.

Some facts: in D1090, 25 clubs in six colour zones took part, using 110 different modes of transport, raising almost £21,000. This sum of money in turn, has nudged the National Wheel Appeal to well over £100,000.  A number of the wheelchairs are now being manufactured, which will give a number of deserving disabled youngsters the opportunity to get involved in sport.

Wouldn't it be fantastic, if the £3,000 we raised jointly with Maidenhead Bridge and the Maidenhead Rotary Club, funded a wheelchair for a young disabled athlete and the person appeared on the winners podium at the Rio Olympics?

Windsor Race Course bucket collection for “End Polio Now”

On Monday 21st October George the Dragon and five other members of
the club collected £162 from race-goers at the last meeting of the year at Windsor Race Course. This along with the doubling of money by Bill Gates means that £486 goes to help end polio in the World.
This could have been considerably more if the attendance had not
been so poor due to the atrocious weather the previous day and early that morning. Hopefully next year we will get a date in August and be able to raise more money!

The team raised over £ 300 for our International Service projects.
A special congrautulations to David for his 16th consecutive participation in the walk!

Climb every mountain...

Well, very steep hills actually... OK, quite steep hills... oh, all  right then, gentle slopes, but we did climb them all without getting off our bikes!
On the last day of August, Trevor, Pippa and Andrew set off from Stag Meadow in very pleasant sunshine for a  morning’s sponsored cycle ride in aid of “Literacy and other Rotary Charities”.
They cycled a total for 15 miles and raised over £400 in sponsorship that will support literacy projects, in particular the donation of dictionaries to year 6 schoolchildren in the Windsor area.
If you were unable to join us this year, we hope you'll feel inspired to do so in 2014. Think about it and be ready to answer when you hear the  call... ”On yer bike” !

Having fun at the Windsor Summer Fayre

29/6/2013

On 29 June, a gloriously sunny day, we ran a stall at the Windsor Summer Fayre. Just as for the last few years, the "throw a teddy bear" game was a favourite of the families attending. A new game introduced by Chris this year, the American Corn Hole, also proved to be very popular.
We met lots of great people, had lots of fun and raised over £100 for The Rotary Foundation!
